Description
It can be hard to live in a way that exhibits Christian leadership. Most of us would like to just slink to the background of our Christian lives. We don’t want to be leaders who model correct behavior. We simply want to live our own Christian lives to the best of our ability. And on the surface, there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with that. But if you want to be more than mediocre and if you want to inspire others to live an authentic faith by acting with grace, you must do more than live an insular faith. Instead, you must live your lives in a way that coheres with a true Christian faith by inspiring others to be their best.
Before I get started is to define Christian leadership. It is a dynamic relational process in which people, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, partner to achieve a common goal. The goal is to serve others by leading them by evangelizing others. In other words, Christian leadership is not rooted in worldly notions of success, such as the love of money or power. Jesus himself spoke against this when expressing the importance of serving others.
Jesus says “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:25-28 (NKJV)
Therefore, leaders are not to oppress and overpower others with their authority, like the Gentiles did. Instead, leaders should serve others, which Jesus demonstrated when He “made Himself of no reputation, taking the forum of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became a servant to the point of death, even the death on the cross. (Philippians 2:7-8)
